CHIESA DI S. ALESSANDRO

La chiesa di Sant’Alessandro sorge nell'antico borgo di Valenzano e risale al IX secolo, quando il vescovo di Brescia Notingo donò una corte sita in vico Valentiano al monastero dei Santi Cosma e Damiano di Brescia. Proprietari di vari appezzamenti di terreni erano il vescovo di Brescia e il monastero di San Faustino, al quale verosimilmente si deve la costruzione della chiesa di Sant’Alessandro. Facente capo alla Pieve di Bornato, la chiesa, oggi sconsacrata, possedeva nel XV secolo alcuni terreni e vigneti nei territori delle attuali località di Valenzano.
Nel 1497 tale beneficio venne conferito al monastero di San Faustino Maggiore di Brescia, con il compito della cura delle anime del borgo. Dal XVI secolo era presente un prete che officiava messa, ma dal secolo successivo le funzioni religiose cessarono.
Sant’Alessandro rimase di pertinenza del monastero bresciano fino al 1798, quando, a seguito delle soppressioni napoleoniche, venne messo all’asta assieme a tutti gli altri beni di San Faustino Maggiore. Nel 1810 la chiesa risulta di proprietà della famiglia Cantoni, mentre nel 1855, con casa e giardino annessi, passò alla famiglia Valotti, da cui discende l’attuale proprietario Bettoni.

The church of St Alexander stands in the ancient village of Valenzano and dates back to the 9th century, when the bishop of Brescia Notingo donated a courtyard located in vico Valentiano to the monastery of Saints Cosmas and Damian of Brescia. Owners of various plots of land were the bishop of Brescia and the monastery of St. Faustino, to whom the construction of the church of St. Alessandro is probably owed. Belonging to the Pieve of Bornato, the church, now deconsecrated, owned some land and vineyards in the 15th century in the area of the present-day Valenzano.
In 1497, this advatage was conferred to the Monastery of St Faustino Maggiore of Brescia, with the task of caring for the souls of the village. From the 16th century, there was a priest who officiated at mass, but from the following century, religious services ceased.
St Alessandro remained the property of the monastery of Brescia until 1798, when, following the Napoleonic suppressions, it was auctioned off along with all the other property of St Faustino Maggiore. In 1810 the church was owned by the Cantoni family, while in 1855 it passed to the Valotti family, from whom the current owner, Bettoni, descends.
